Chats

A chat is one conversation with an agent, in one project folder, on one computer. The Agents tab lists chats by project, most recent first.

  • Model: the chat model, or Automatic to pick one for each request.
  • Advisor: a stronger model the agent can ask for a second opinion, or none.
  • Approvals: Ask, Auto or Don’t ask. See Approvals and safety.
  • Mode: Plan, Work or Chat. Plan reads and plans without changing anything. Work does the job. Chat just talks.
  • Usage: how much of each account’s limits you’ve used.
  • Type more messages. They wait in a queue and go in order. Send Now sends one straight away.
  • Choose Stop to interrupt the agent.
  • Approvals, questions and plans open as windows. Answer them with the choices they offer.

Attach images and files with the paperclip, by pasting, or by dropping them on the chat. The agent gets images with your message, and the saved path of any other file.

Type / in the message box for the list. The everyday ones:

Command What it does
/model Pick the chat model, or auto
/goal <text> Keep working on a goal until it’s verified done
/btw <question> Ask a side question without interrupting
/compact Summarize the conversation to free up context
/context What’s in the context and how full it is
/cost What this conversation has cost, at API list prices
/usage Usage limits and resets, per account
/resume Continue a saved conversation
/rewind Undo back to before one of your messages
/clear Start a new conversation
/agents Subagents: watch and message them
/shells Commands the agent started, and their output
/memory What IXEL One has learned about this project
/mcp MCP servers and their tools
/export Save the conversation as Markdown, or /export html
/add-dir <path> Let the agent work in another folder
/permissions The allow and deny rules in effect
/workspace The repos of this workspace
/vault Secrets the agent’s commands can use
/login Add or remove accounts
/settings Settings
/help Every command, and the keys

Start a line with ! to run a shell command yourself.

/rewind takes you back to before one of your messages. Choose whether to restore your files, the conversation, or both. IXEL One saves a checkpoint of the files the agent changes at every turn.

When the agent builds something, it can show it to you beside the chat:

  • A web app or API opens in a web view (in your browser on Linux and in the terminal). When the agent runs on another computer, IXEL One forwards the port over your private network.
  • A native app on this computer comes to the front. One on another computer opens that computer’s screen, showing just that app.
